George Michael Gajary was born on May 25, 1940, and passed away on November 30, 2024.
He was originally from Pécs, Hungary, and his family relocated to Budapest during World War Il, residing there from 1941 to 1956. George often enjoyed recounting stories from his childhood, particularly memories of sharing potatoes and sledding in the streets with the Soviet soldiers. He developed a profound appreciation for music, acquiring skills in playing both the harmonica and keyboard. Following his military service, during which he spent two years in the Hungarian army driving trucks, George's mother encouraged him to leave Hungary in his twenties. Although he was apprehended on his initial attempt, he eventually succeeded in reaching Germany, where he spent three years living contentedly. In 1969, he emigrated to the United States to join his older brother, Bela (1935-2024). Fluent in multiple languages, George enhanced his English skills by watching cartoons with his brother's children: Ted, Zia, Jean, and Claire. He earned his United States citizenship on December 5, 1974.
In 1984, George met Lisa Bross, and they were united in marriage in 1985. Throughout their 39-year marriage, they raised two daughters: Amelia and Megan. Residing in Jackson, New Jersey, George pursued a career in insurance and investment until the age of 59, after which he transitioned to a more fulfilling role as a school bus driver. He dedicated 15 years to this vocation before retiring at the age of 75. George was an active member of the Jackson Elks Lodge, serving as Exalted Ruler for two years. He also delighted in playing the role of Santa Claus at the Christmas parties hosted by Robert Wood Johnson Hospital from 1986 to 1995, a role that brought him great joy.
In 2020, George relocated to Zebulon, North Carolina, with his wife Lisa and daughter Amelia, so they could be closer to daughter Megan, son-in-law Pete Sabba, and grandchildren Peter and Ben. A man passionate about his family, George was known for his fondness for lighthearted jokes and puns, as well as his strong sense of patriotism. He was a gentle and kind individual whose smile illuminated his entire face. His absence will be profoundly felt. Final arrangements will be conducted privately.
Please keep this family in your prayers for the days, weeks, and months to come.
